Randall Sexton painted at Art at the Inn 2010
California based artist Randall Sexton is nationally known for the color and expressive brushwork in his oil paintings of "everyday" scenes. He is described as a "painters' painter" by Jean Stern (Director, The Irvine Museum of Art). In his words, "As one of the premier contemporary painters of the California landscape, Randall paints still-lifes, figures, and portraits with equal mastery... His work evokes deep feelings, whether it's the solitude of a deserted street at night, or the exultation of a beautiful landscape, and each speaks softly to the viewer."
Originally from rural New England, Sexton transplanted to San Francisco, CA after completing a BFA from the University of Connecticut at Storrs, in 1980. Since then he has been a fixture in the Bay Area art scene, with a reputation as an inspiring teacher and collectable fine artist. For ten years he held a position with the San Francisco Academy of Art. He now teaches various private workshops and classes including the Bay Area's own Pixar Studios. His workshops have been held in destinations within the U.S. and abroad.
Acknowledged by jurors and artists alike, Randall has garnered many awards for his paintings. Most notably: in 2008, he was honored with the "Artists' Choice Award" in Laguna Beach at the 10th Annual Laguna Beach Plein Air Event held at the Laguna Museum of Art. He won Best of Show and top honors in similar events including, Telluride, CO; Sedona, AZ; Maui, HI; and Carmel, CA at their respective painting festivals. In 2007, he was singled out with a First Place –"Jurors Choice Award" at The Napa Valley Museum's "Northern Views" landscape show.
He has been featured in national journals including: "American Artist"-August 2000; "Southwest Art"-July 2003; "Plein Air" (currently- "Fine Art Connoisseur")-November 2004; and "Workshop"-December 2006. He has been a member of the California Art Club, The Laguna Beach Plein Air Painters Association, "The Outsiders" (a group of artists loosely connected to "The Society of Six") and The Baywood Artists (committed to working on environmentally sensitive projects).

Saim Çaglayan is co-organizer, and painted at Art at the Inn 2010 & 2012
Saim Çaglayan was born in Istanbul, Turkey and came to the United States in 1968 to study architecture. After three years of study his interest changed, and he went on to complete his B.A. in Sculpture from California State University, Long Beach. He then took further graduate courses in art from California State University, Fullerton and the Art Institute of Southern California. For over twenty years he taught sculpture for Crafton Hills College and Golden West College and recently taught plein air painting at Irvine Valley College, and conducts regular private painting classes and workshops in California and on the island of Kaua'i.
Saim has been painting the landscapes of the California desert, coastline and Islands of Hawaii en plein air for many years now. His goal is to capture the ever-transient light and its colors within a composition of balance and harmony.
In 1996 Saim founded the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association (LPAPA). His goal was to revive the tradition of the early California painters who lived and painted in Laguna Beach. LPAPA has become a vibrant force in the California art community with impressive membership reaching from Florida to Hawaii.
Saim founded the Kauai Outdoor Painters Association (KOPA) with Pierre Bouret in 2003. Ronaldo Macedo and Saim started ISLANDERS in 2005, a group of painters representing the Hawaiian Islands. He collaborated with the Borrego Art Institute in 2007 to launch the popular Borrego Springs Plein Air Invitational, which continues to this day. All of these organizations and events promote plein air painting and benefit non-profit organizations in each community.

Scott Burdick painted at Art at the Inn 2012, November 7-10.
Scott was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1967 where his mother and father early on encouraged his interest in art. "I remember my mother showing me how to transform simple shapes like circles, triangles, and squares into objects like planes, helicopters, and fish. It seemed such a magical thing." Scott began taking life-drawing classes in high school at the American Academy of Art under the legendary Bill Parks. "Though I'd always loved drawing, it was Mr. Parks who filled me with the enthusiasm and discipline necessary to improve my skills. His love of painting and creative expression infected us all." After the Academy, Scott continued studying informally with Richard Schmid at the Palette and Chisel Art Club, where he met his wife, painter Susan Lyon. "It's a wonderful thing being able to paint together all the time and grow as artists together," Scott says.
His ideas for paintings come from everywhere. "What makes a subject attractive to me are the same things that attract us all. The beauty of a young girl, the character of a weathered face, the solitude of a farm at sunset, or even the story behind someone or something that makes them interesting." Scott believes it is his job as artist to recognize when this happens, analyze it, and use his skills to convey the feeling to others. He notes "some paintings are as simple as stopping at the sight of something interesting, while others may take more time to research than to actually paint."
Scott and Susan now live in a rural area of North Carolina, a place that supports and feeds their many artistic pursuits. Scott has also produced a series of online educational videos available through his website and via DVDs published through Lilidahl publications. Below is a sampling of his art.
Scott's newest work created during Art at the Inn 2012 will be on sale in our gallery beginning Nov. 8th.
John Burton painted at Art at the Inn 2012, November 7-10.
John Burton is an award- winning oil painter best known for his stirring and vivid depictions of the transitory beauty of our ever-changing world. He is at once tangibly influenced by the Western and Russian painters of the early twentieth century, and entirely unique in his remarkable ability to capture the profound spirituality and majesty of his surroundings.
Burton has traveled and painted around the globe, always maintaining his home and artistic center in the American West. Burton's deep American roots permeate the rich, natural character of his art, and inform his work's reverent tone. He is one of Carmel's most celebrated artists.
Among his many awards are Artist Choice Award Laguna Beach Plein Air Invitational, First Runner Up in the American Impressionist Society Grand Prize and Artist Choice Torrey Pines Plein Air Invitational, Award of Excellence at the Oil Painters of America National Exhibition, Award of Excellence at the Oil Painters of America National Show, and many more.

John's newest work created during Art at the Inn 2012 will be on sale in our gallery beginning Nov. 8th.
Mark Kerckhoff painted at Art at the Inn 2012, November 7-10.
A 6th-generation Californian, Mark was born in Covina in 1959 and studied at California State University Long Beach.
Mark considers himself an abstract realist painter. The base of his interest stems from growing up in rural Los Angeles County hiking amongst the Sycamore-lined gullies, the South Hills, and the views of the snow-capped San Gabriel Mountains. These early childhood memories continue to be a presence in his paintings.
Inspired by artists like Hermann Herzog, William Keith, and Thomas Moran, Mark executes paintings that embrace his love of color, high aesthetics and craftsmanship.
Mark's favorite quote is by John Ruskin the great Victorian art critic, "All great schools enforce delicacy of drawing and subtlety of sight: as of yet, found without exception respecting art is that all great art is delicate".
As Jean Stern, Director of the Irvine Museum says, "I have long admired Mark Kerckhoff for his excellent paintings. They show his superb ability to draw, his solidity of form and perspective, and most of all his unfailing facility with color. His paintings are always characterized by a unique and convincing sense of outdoor light, and like few other artists, he succeeds at producing the true effect of the fluidity of natural light."
Some of Mark's many awards are: Glenna Hartmann Invitational, Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, Artists Choice Award; 2009 Borrego Springs Plein Air Invitational, Best of Show Award and Artist Choice Award; 2008 Borrego Springs Plein Air Invitational, Artist Choice Award and Third Place; Plein Air 2003, Sonora Desert Museum, Honorable Mention; Plein Air Painting Competition, Laguna Art Museum, Bronze and Quick Draw Award; and in 2000 Collectors Choice, Art Institute of Southern California.
His work can be found in the collections of: Festival of Arts, Laguna Beach; Thunderbird Country Club, Rancho Mirage, CA; City of La Quinta, CA; Sizzler Corporation; McDonalds Corporation; Sony Music; and Gateway Corporation..
Mark's newest work created during Art at the Inn 2012 will be on sale in our gallery beginning Nov. 8th.
